There are a lot of reasons
to do this. They're all
worth mentioning.

But we're here for #5.

For Investors:

Even if you don't care about global warming or improving the standard of living in our city, this project still makes sense as a viable socially conscious investment.  By keeping costs low, we will make this project viable even in neighborhoods with low housing values.  This will also increase the chances that local community members with limited means literally and figuratively 'buy-in' to the project.  We believe this ethical investment can also be a builder of financial wealth for community members that may not have access to other wealth-building opportunities.

For Residents:

Living in a neutral house will mean living with almost no monthly expenditures for energy, heat, food, and water.   This means residents can live comfortably on less income, or free up income for savings & investment.

For the Community:

The neutral home sites will be clustered in target areas of the city in order to share resources AND strengthen the surrounding community's housing values and quality of life.   We believe this project will trigger the financial stabilization of neighborhoods and thus increase property tax revenue from the area. ...That's good for all city residents.

Neighborhoods

This project could stabilize neighborhoods.  By creating focused investment zones, small groups of neutral houses can share resources AND potentially strengthen nearby home values.

This focused micro-investment in undeveloped or run-down properties could also discourage drug activity in the area and possibly reduce arrests & crime.

Stable & Safe

There a lot of hidden costs in that lovely orange we buy at the grocery store in December. ...And we wont even go into the costs of a BigMac.

By creating gardens that support the nutritional needs of residents and neighbors, we can increase access to nutritious foods in the heart of a food desert. And, in addition to improving local food access and security, eating produce grown on-site means further reducing our CO2 footprint,  monthly food budget, and cholesterol.

By eating organic, we limit our exposure to the carcinogens often used in pesticides and chemical fertilizers.

By eating local, or in the case of the Neutral house project: by eating foods grown on-site, we bring the startling amount of fossil fuels used to grow, harvest, process, and ship food down to ZERO.

By eating what we grow, we have a chance to build an understanding of and respect for food.  It can be very moving to have grown from seed the meal that nourishes you.

The Earth is

We've tried to keep this site light and upbeat.  That's because we know that this project can be exciting, fun, and rewarding simply as an exercise in innovation and creativity.  But the truth is, this is also a pretty heavy topic.

A lot is riding on our ability to get our shit together and make changes in how we live.

Ultimately, that's why we're here, and that's why you should join us.

...Because we are using more than our fair share.

The good news is no one is asking you to return to a neolithic standard of living.  we can use radically less AND live better, happier lives than we are living now.  But, we do need to change, and it is an emergency.

Learn about your Ecological Footprint:

Your finances, physical and emotional health, your community, nation and the environment... all of it... will be better off if you focused consumption on needs rather than wants.

By being mindful about the objects we allow into our lives, we ensure a simpler, less cluttered, less stressful daily life, a more financially secure life, a less wasteful and ecologically harmful life.  All of that ends up being very good for your body and mind.

The neutral house is designed with needs in mind.  It is designed to foster freedom from the clutter that can so easily fill up our houses, days, and brains with unnecessary stress, worry, and work.
